How can I check my breasts?

FAQ

Breast self-examination is an important way for women to monitor their breast health and detect any changes or abnormalities early on. Here are the steps to perform a breast self-examination:

  1. Begin by looking at your breasts in the mirror. Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Check for any changes in the size, shape, or contour of your breasts, as well as any swelling, dimpling, or puckering of the skin. Also, look for any nipple changes such as a change in direction, or discharge.
  2. Raise your arms and check for the same changes.
  3. Lie down and place a pillow under your right shoulder. Use your left hand to feel your right breast, using circular motions with the pads of your fingers. Start at the outer edge of your breast and move towards the center. Make sure to cover the entire breast area, including the underarm area and the area beneath the breast. Use light, medium, and firm pressure to feel different depths of breast tissue.
  4. Repeat step 3 with your other breast.

It’s important to perform a breast self-examination once a month, preferably a few days after your period when your breasts are less likely to be tender or swollen. If you notice any changes or abnormalities during the examination, consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
