In individuals with this condition, tryptophan is not properly metabolized, leading to the production of an abnormal substance called indican.
Indican is excreted in the urine and can cause it to turn blue or blue-green in color. This color change is often more noticeable in diapers, hence the name “blue diaper syndrome.” Apart from blue urine, affected individuals may also have a characteristic odor to their urine.
