Is IPF permanent?

FAQ

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and chronic lung disease that causes scarring or fibrosis of the lungs. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for IPF, and it is considered a chronic condition.

The scarring caused by IPF is irreversible, which means that the damage to the lung tissue is permanent. However, the rate at which the scarring progresses can vary from person to person. In some cases, the progression may be slow, while in others, it may be more rapid.

Although IPF cannot be cured, there are treatments available that can help to slow down the progression of the disease and manage symptoms. These treatments may include medications, oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, and lung transplant in severe cases.
