Antiviral medications such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir can be used to treat outbreaks and to reduce the likelihood of future outbreaks. In addition, practicing safe sex, including using condoms and avoiding sexual contact during outbreaks, can help to reduce the risk of transmitting herpes to sexual partners.
