Can endometriosis be cancerous?

FAQ

Endometriosis itself is not cancerous, but it can increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer. Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows outside of it, such as on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other organs in the pelvic area.

Women with endometriosis have a slightly increased risk of developing ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus). The risk is higher in women who have had endometriosis for a long time or who have severe endometriosis.

It’s important to note that the majority of women with endometriosis do not develop cancer. Regular monitoring and early detection can help manage any increased risk. Women with endometriosis should discuss their individual risk factors and screening options with their healthcare provider.
