Is COVID a risk for IPF?

FAQ

IPF, or idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, is a chronic lung disease characterized by the progressive scarring of lung tissue. COVID-19, on the other hand, is a respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Having IPF alone does not necessarily increase the risk of contracting COVID-19. However, people with IPF may be at increased risk of developing severe illness from COVID-19 if they do become infected, because their lung function is already compromised.

According to the American Thoracic Society, people with IPF should take the same precautions as everyone else to avoid contracting COVID-19, including getting vaccinated, wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and frequently washing their hands. It is also important for people with IPF to continue their regular medical care and to seek medical attention promptly if they develop symptoms of COVID-19.
